Por ser a mais cara e desenvolvida da cidade, a Zona Leste concentra a maior parte dos edifícios de apartamentos. Elegantes torres residenciais são marca registrada desta região, assim como serviços sofisticados como Shopping Centers, cinemas, faculdades, hipermercados, revendas de automóveis de luxo, lojas de griffes famosas e numerosas agências bancárias. Being the most exclusive neighboring in town, the East Zone concentrates most of the residential buildings, elegant highrisers that are the trademark of this region. Also found in nearby districts are Shopping Malls, movie theaters, universities, hypermarkets, sophisticated stores, luxury car dealers and many bank offices. Por ser a única Capital Nordestina fora do litoral, Teresina tem investido no turismo de negócios e eventos como forma de atrair visitantes. Anteriormente usada apenas como porta de entrada e ponto de apoio para turistas que se dirigiam a pontos turísticos mais conhecidos do Estado – como o Delta do Parnaíba, os Parques Nacionais de Sete Cidades e da Serra da Capivara e cidades históricas como Oeiras e Amarante –, o crescimento da cidade fez com que a mesma passasse a sediar eventos de porte regional e nacional. O Centro de Convenções do Piauí, visto na primeira imagem, foi inaugurado em 1976, estando hoje saturado e tendo pequena capacidade para congressos de maior porte, sendo mais utilizado para feiras e exposições; nesta foto, vê-se um belo mural do artista plástico Nonato Oliveira na parte externa do prédio, retratando expressões da cultura local. Os grandes congressos e convenções hoje ocorrem nos centros de eventos da rede hoteleira, cada vez maiores e mais bem estruturados, sendo o Centro de Convenções do Rio Poty Hotel (visto na segunda foto) o maior da Capital, com capacidade para mais de 1700 congressistas em seus salões. Given that Teresina is the only Capital City not situated in the coastline in the Northeast region, business meetings and events have become its major source of tourist attraction. Formerly only the front door for visitors heading for some of the more largely known tourist attractions of the State – like the Delta of the Parnaíba River, Sete Cidades and Serra da Capivara National Parks and historical cities like Oeiras and Amarante –, the State Capital is increasingly being chosen as the venue of regional and national events. The State Convention Center, seen in the first image, was inaugurated in 1976 and is now inadequate for major meetings, being more commonly used for fairs and expositions; this shot shows a nice mural panel by the renowned artist Nonato Oliveira, in a outer wall of the building. Nowadays, the most important conventions and congresses take place at the convention centers of the hotels of the city, which get more and more equipped and sophisticated over time, being the Rio Poty Hotel (second image) the largest and best outfitted of these facilities, able to receive more than 1700 people simultaneously in its rooms. O calendário cultural da cidade abrange eventos para todos os estilos e gostos, desde a cultura regional até as manifestações universais de arte. O Piauí Pop é um grande festival musical que traz anualmente a Teresina nomes consagrados do Pop-Rock nacional, como Vanessa da Mata, Engenheiros do Hawaii e Paralamas do Sucesso (fileira superior, © Márcio Anderson). O Salão Internacional de Humor do Piauí, um dos mais importantes do mundo, reúne na cidade os principais expoentes do humor do Brasil e do exterior, enquanto o Salão do Livro do Piauí reúne escritores de primeira linha e homenageia grandes nomes da literatura do passado. A Prefeitura Municipal promove, anualmente, salões de dança, fotografia, teatro, vídeo, artes plásticas e música. O festival multimídia “Artes de Março” é promovido anualmente pelo Teresina Shopping, constituindo-se em um importante evento que abrange música, fotografia, artes plásticas, dança e cinema. A Exposição e Feira Agropecuária de Teresina mostra o melhor da agricultura e da pecuária do Piauí e de outros Estados, além de realizar shows de astros da música brasileira. A cultura popular é contemplada com o Festival de Violeiros do Norte-Nordeste e o Encontro Nacional de Folguedos, este último retratado nas imagens da fileira inferior.

 

Teresina's events calendar has options for all styles and preferences, from the regional to the international. Piauí Pop is a great music festival that brings to the city some of the most important names of the Brazilian Pop-Rock, as Vanessa da Mata, Engenheiros do Hawaii and Paralamas do Sucesso (upper row, © Márcio Anderson). The International Salon of Humor of Piauí, one of the most important of its genre in the world, is a meeting of celebrated artists from Brazil and from abroad, while the State Salon of Literature congregates important writers and makes homage to great deceased artists. The City Government promotes annual salons of dance, photography, theater, video-making, fine arts and music. The “Artes de Março” Festival is an important multimedia event that occurs annually under the sponsorship of Teresina Shopping. Teresina Agropecuary Expo and Fair shows the best of the agriculture and stockbreeding of Piauí and other States, besides having daily shows with superstars of Brazilian music. The most important events of popular culture are the Festival of Violists of North and Northeast Regions and the National Folklore Festival, the latter shown in the images of the lower row.

O Festival Nacional de Folguedos tornou-se um dos maiores eventos folclóricos do Brasil, fruto de parceria entre o Poder Público e a iniciativa privada. A festa, assim como os festejos juninos em todo o Nordeste, atrai milhares de pessoas durante sua realização, tanto do próprio Piauí como turistas de outros Estados. The National Folklore Festival is one of the most important events of this kind in Brazil, being a partnership of the Government and private entrepreneurs. The Festival attracts thousands of people, either from Piauí or from other States. The panorama image above allows one to picture the magnitude that this event has reached.

O crescimento da cidade fez com que a mesma adquirisse uma característica mais cosmopolita. Além da cultura regional, variadas manifestações da cultura mundial podem ser encontradas na noite de Teresina, como espetáculos de reggae, bossa-nova, rock, chorinho, MPB e música clássica, além de shows humorísticos, bastante típicos dos Estados do Piauí e Ceará. Em seqüência, são mostradas fotos da Banda Conhá (apresentando-se no Espaço Cultural Noé Mendes, na UFPI, © Márcio Anderson), do cantor Ostiga Jr. (no pub Giramundo), do cantor Vavá Ribeiro (arquivo pessoal do artista) e do humorista João Cláudio Moreno, estes últimos em apresentações no Theatro 4 de Setembro. Artistas internacionais como Ray Conniff, Jimmy Cliff, B. J. Thomas, Information Society e Alanis Morissette já fizeram shows na cidade.

The development of the city made of it a cosmopolitan center. Beyond the regional rhythms, one can find varied sounds from all over the world in the nightlife, like shows of rock, reggae, bossa-nova, chorinho, Brazilian popular music and erudite concerts, besides humor shows, very typical of Piauí and Ceará States. A iluminação natalina de Teresina é uma atração à parte. Muitos teresinenses que vivem em outras cidades voltam à terra natal para passar as festas com a família e, além disso, consumidores de cidades próximas vêm à cidade para as compras de fim de ano. Todos se encantam com as luzes de Natal, aqui mostradas no Bairro Aeroporto (primeira foto), ao longo da Avenida Frei Serafim (segunda e terceira imagens), na Ponte Juscelino Kubitschek (quarta foto) e no Palácio de Karnak, sede do Governo do Estado (quinta e sexta imagens).
 

Teresina gets nicely illuminated during Christmas. Many people from Teresina who live elsewhere come back home during this time and, in addition, consumers from nearby cities get there for the holiday shopping season. Natives and visitors fall in love with the Christmas lights, here shown in the Aeroporto District (first image), along Frei Serafim Avenue (second and third shots), in Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge (fourth photo) and at the Karnak Palace, the seat of the State Government (fifth and sixth images).
